Civil & Structural
The Civil & Structural discipline, sometimes supplemented with Architectural, focuses on the design of the following:
- foundations
- steel and concrete constructions
- control and administration buildings and sub-stations
- harbour, transhipment and offshore constructions
- sewage and underground pipe systems
- roads and parking spaces on the site
During the conceptual phase, information is gathered about the building site, such as ground and climatological data, the infrastructure of the environment and the technical specifications of building materials etc.
Based on the preliminary layout and weights, a preliminary piling plan is made for the foundations of the pipe bridges, equipment and buildings. It also takes into account the amount of land to be excavated for the foundations. Together with other specialists, the layout of the site and the buildings are examined, such as control towers/buildings, electrical switching stations and sub-stations.
The steel and concrete structures are calculated and draughted during the basic and detailed designing of the plant. Underground sewage systems are also designed and hydraulic calculations made. Draughtsmen and builders usually carry out the design phase using 3D computer systems. This modern and efficient method of working allows data to be sent directly to contractors or steel manufacturers without the need for drawing up blueprints. Constructions calculated by the engineer are processed by designers in a digital 3D model. For the calculations, the civil & structural engineer should frequently contact the other specialists in order to acquire the necessary load and geometric information. Interaction with Electrical & Instrumentation during the design phase is mainly to do with the location of the underground cables, but also the location and weight of the cable ducts in the buildings and pipe bridges.
After completion of the design, construction work is outsourced to civil contractors, where the Civil Structural Engineer sometimes carries out the construction management on behalf of the plant owner or engineering firm, or supervises the Civil Structural aspect of the building.
